I’ve lived through two Troon ‘Opens’ in my time living there. The first as a child when I had to share a room with my brother as my bedroom was rented out to a travelling golfer (I’m sure he loved my lilac wallpaper and poster of the Spice Girls!) and the second time as a teenager. The latter was obviously my favoured experience as I was old enough (cough) to celebrate in the street parties and dance to a bagpiper playing in Portland Street.
Troon is well known for its Golf courses, stunning beaches and delicious fish and chips, but to me it is a place to bring up a family or retire. Neither of which I plan to do anytime soon! As beautiful as it is, I couldn’t get away from hometown quick enough and at the ripe old age of 17 I quit my job in a local Hotel, backed by bags and headed for Glasgow.
It’s full of wonderful friendly people, an exciting music scene and loads of cracking restaurants. I live in the Southside of the city with my husband (Stephen) and our two cats and a dog.
Up until recent years (which I’ll get into later), our lives have been very busy. I focussed on progressing my career and when I wasn’t doing that we would travel around the country climbing Munros (Scottish word for mountain), trips abroad or going to gigs and festivals. I love music and have a fairly eclectic taste. Paul Simon, FatBoy Slim, Venga Boys, Chemical Brothers, Cold Play, Dr. Hook, Craig David... the list goes on!
Throughout my life my parents have owned restaurants or worked in catering so I have a huge passion for food. I also love to travel! Any trip we plan is typically centered around where we can find amazing local food. I have a special love for the mediterranean as my dad retired and moved to Turkey 15 years ago. As a self confessed 'daddy's girl' I love visiting him there every year. Well, until Covid hit!
Stephen and I met a couple of years after I moved to Glasgow. He had also moved to the big city from a town not far from mine. It turned out that we actually went to the same highschool but he’s a little *cough* older than me so our paths had never crossed.
After about a hundred years of being boyfriend and girlfriend he asked me to be his wife. In the streets of Amsterdam on New Years Eve as the clock struck midnight and fireworks went off around us, he turned to me and asked if I’d like to go shopping for an engagement ring in the morning.
The following year we got married in Loch Lomond. And yes, we danced to Loch Lomond :)
Shortly after we were married I started to experience some health concerns which later led to me being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Not exactly what you’d hope to happen in your first year of marriage!
Getting the diagnosis put the brakes on life for a while. Treatment has been a rough ride but I’ve come out the other side of it stronger and happier than ever, with a different perspective of life.
In my time away I’ve become involved in fundraising for the MS Trust. On the 1st year anniversary of my diagnosis I asked some of my friends and family to help me fundraise. A way to close the year off by doing something positive. To date we have raised £5,600!
So don’t be surprised when I ask you to put your hand in your pocket or do some fundraising.
